Athletic Training Degree Requirements
Students interested in earning the Master of Arts degree in Athletic Training from Carthage must enter the program with foundational knowledge in human anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, biology, exercise physiology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and statistics. The program is open to current Carthage Allied Health Science majors, as well as students with a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
For students who major in Allied Health Science as an undergraduate at Carthage
For the Pre-Professional phase of the 3+2 Master of Arts in Athletic Training program, undergraduate Carthage students will declare an Allied Health Science major. Allied health science provides an interdisciplinary and liberal arts foundation to recognize and understand key theories and concepts associated with health, wellness, and pathophysiological conditions, preparing students for admission into the professional phase.
Students will obtain a fundamental understanding of basic sciences and scientific reasoning; demonstrate a broad understanding of anatomy and physiology; present information in a clear, logical, and critical presentation in both oral and written formats; and gain the foundational knowledge required to continue graduate-level studies.
The Professional Phase occurs over summer, fall, J-Term, and spring. Students will receive a summer break from June through July and a winter break during the traditional December holiday break.
Students must provide proof of completion within the past five years, earning a letter grade of “C” or better, in the following courses: statistics, kinesiology or biomechanics, exercise physiology, human anatomy with lab (two courses), biology, chemistry with lab (two courses), physics, and psychology.

Jumpstart Experiences
During this phase, students also must complete Jump Start Experiences, faculty- and mentor-led activities that familiarize them with the profession of athletic training.
Application Process
Students seeking admission into the professional phase of the 3 + 2 program will submit a direct admission application by Sept. 15 verifying the completion of the program prerequisites. Students not fulfilling the criteria will collaborate with their advisors to complete the allied health science degree.

For students with a bachelor’s degree in a related field
Students with an earned bachelor’s degree in a related field can complete a Master of Arts in Athletic Training at Carthage. Following admission to the program, students will complete two years of graduate-level coursework.
Students applying to the two-year track must successfully complete the following courses with a minimum grade of “C”: anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and statistics.
